Métis Week

Each year on November 16, people across Canada honour the Right Honourable Louis Riel through commemorative ceremonies marking the anniversary of his execution in 1885. In Alberta, the week surrounding November 16 is known as Métis Week.

Organized by the Métis Nation of Alberta, Métis Week is an opportunity to honour Louis Riel’s legacy, learn about Métis history and heritage, and celebrate the culture, identity and ongoing contributions of Métis people. Through commemorative ceremonies, educational activities and community gatherings, the week also provides an opportunity to reflect on historical injustices and recognize the resilience and strength of Métis communities.

Rock Your Mocs

Rock Your Mocs Week is an annual celebration that encourages Indigenous people and allies to wear moccasins as a visible expression of cultural pride, identity and solidarity. Participants share photos and stories to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of Indigenous cultures across North America.

Moccasins reflect the distinct traditions, environments and resources of the communities from which they originate. Their materials, designs and styles can vary according to cultural traditions, individual artists, intended use and seasonal needs. Each pair can carry meaning through the craftsmanship, knowledge and stories passed down through generations.

Moccasins also remind us of our connection to the land and our responsibility to care for Mother Earth. Wearing moccasins can be an opportunity to honour ancestral teachings, celebrate cultural identity and consider how we move forward in a good way.
